Durga is the invincible warrior goddess of Hinduism. She is a principal deity who banishes evil and protects righteousness. She embodies supreme feminine energy. Durga riding on a lion is known as “Simhavahini” which is often a more traditional depiction of her, rather than “Sherawali” or Durga riding upon a tiger. Simhavahini represents Durga’s righteousness, stability and controlled power. In this specific depiction she has one hand up flat as a blessing and another hand making the “Needle” mudra or “seal” which represents the supreme soul, or creator god, Brahma. In her other hands she holds the following items: lotus, axe, mace and trident.
About Mudras:
Mudras are specific representative body positions, hand and/or finger gestures sometimes referred to as “seals” or “marks” and are highly symbolic.
