Nataraja is Lord Shivas form when he preforms the cosmic dance. The purpose of the cosmic dance is to destroy a weary universe to make way for creation and rebirth.

The flames along the outside symbolize destruction. The arch of the flames (Torana) represents the universe and the cycle of birth and rebirth. The drum in Nataragas upper right hand symbolizes the rhythm / vibration of birth and creation (OM). The snake around his neck is coiled three times representing past, present and future. The moon on his forehead represents the time period though which creation unfolds. Nataragas hair is flowing to represent the presence of the Goddess Ganga (the Ganges River). She flows though his hair to remove ignorance and serve as a symbol of divine grace, purification and control over destructive power. The demon upon which he stands is Apasmara who symbolizes ignorance, ego and spiritual forgetfulness. The fact that Nataraga is standing upon him represents overcoming darkness and ignorance. The lotus petals seen carved into the base are a symbol of rebirth.
