According to tradition, Ratu Kidal was once the daughter of the Javanese king Pajajaran. She was expelled from the palace after refusing to marry to her father’s wishes. King Pajajaran cursed his daughter and she was soon after made the queen of the spirits, with her palace residing under the waves of the Indian Ocean. The curse detailed that she may only become an ordinary woman again on doomsday.
Ratu Kidal was believed to be the incarnation of Batari Durga (Goddess of destruction and chaos) and Dewu Uma (Goddess of protection and prosperity). It was for this reason that the kings would ensure to establish a relationship with Ratu Kidal so that the country he led would stay safe.
